London Road Walk
Discover the history of our former carriage road to London and the buildings that have defined it. Continue into Shaw Street, time permitting.
At the heart of the newly-named Fabric District, London Road was at the centre of the city's textile's trade. Previously the carraige route to Prescot and later, to London, in C19 and early C20, it was densely populated with many migrants from other parts of the UK, Europe and even Russia. There was diverse industry with many from the fabric and fashion industry basing themselves here. Not one, but two, Welsh drapers started department stores here, which dominated the High Street for many years.
The area is also part of the Knowledge Quarter with many medical institutions including Alfred Waterhouse's former Royal Infirmary now part of the University but seen on screen in programmes such as Casualty 1906, Lilies and Peaky Blinders.
