As you stroll through the Viking village of Churchtown, with its thatched cottages once used by fishermen and weavers, it's hard to believe it is only a couple of miles from the busy seaside town of Southport. Yet, until the late C18, their roles were reversed, with Churchtown being the main town of the area known as North Meols and Southport being an unknown fishing hamlet. It was an innkeeper from Churchtown who began the development of Southport into the resort we know today.
