Liverpool Walks for groups

"Henry Tate - entrepreneur and philanthropist"

Theme: A guided walk visiting sites associated with the founder of Tate and Lyle's sugar refinery. Although most associated with the Tate Gallery in London, Henry Tate made his fortune here in Liverpool, first as a master grocer and then as a pioneering sugar manufacturer. He donated generously to educational, health and cultural causes in Liverpool even after he had left the city.

In this walk we visit some of the places and building associated with Henry Tate in the city centre. We see him develop from an apprentice grocer into the owner of a string of shops and then, rather than resting on his laurels, enter the sugar trade at a precarious time in its existence. Then, having excelled in this, we see how this deeply religious man, donated large sums of money to charitable, educational and artistic causes in Liverpool, culminating in his gift to the nation of the Tate Gallery.

Duration: The walk will last approx. one and a half hours to two hours

All walks will go ahead regardless of the weather. Please wear suitable footwear and bring a rainproof. We aim to take every care of your safety but you are reminded that you always walk at your own risk
